Ekwelizer 1 (6) Sam Ekwe (SBC) – I think everybody is unanimous in saying that Ekwe was a beast in the only playdate last week. This was his best offensive output (25 pts, 11/17 fgs vs CSJL, 7/30) ever since scoring 26 pts vs the Altas (8/26/07). He was classic Ekwe in the hustle board as well (17 rebs, 4 blks) with minimal rest (38 mins) in that game. His 7 tos was just an afterthought.

(1) James Sena (JRU) – A double-double (14 pts, 11 rebs vs PCU, 7/30), the game-winning shot, and then some (2 blks). I was seriously contemplating on nominating him for Player of the Week honors, but yeah, Ekwe was doubly better and he made crucial baskets in the clutch too.

Marlon Gomez (PCU) – Before this game (19 pts, 8/10 fgs, 13 rebs, 2 blks vs JRU, 7/30), who was this guy (3.8 ppg, 4.5 rpg in first six games)? This makes him the second unheralded Dolphin after Rogelio Busa was considered to be in the rankings a few weeks back.

Lei Navarro (PCU) – The Dolphins are suffering from a case of “when would all our three veterans have a good game together”. While Beau Belga was scoreless and Liz Amparado was limited to 4 pts, it was Navarro who did all the work (19 pts, 50% fg vs JRU, 7/30) along with the help of Gomez, of course.

Borgie Hermida (SBC) – I would like to think that Hermida is a poor man’s version of Escobal, only that he played slightly better (10 pts, 7 asts vs CSJL, 7/30). One half of the reason for John Melegrito’s ejection, I have another connection between him and his backcourt partner from Davao.

(7) Pong Escobal (SBC) – The other half of the reason for John Melegrito’s ejection, Escobal fared well (7 pts, 8 rebs, 5 asts, 5 tos, 35 mins vs CSJL, 7/30). Not as mind-boggling as what we usually expect from him though.

Jayson Nocom/Marvin Hayes (JRU) – For having identical outputs (6 pts, 10 rebs vs PCU, 7/30), they are tied. I was also considering long-range chuckers John Wilson (12 pts, 0/7 3pts, 7 rebs, 3 stls vs PCU, 7/30) and Marc Cagoco (11 pts, 25% fg, 3 asts vs PCU, 7/30) but their percentages are much left to be desired.

Jake Pascual (SBC) – Behind all the noise Ekwe made, Pascual had a quiet 12 pts on 5/5 fgs and 2/2 fts plus 7 rebs for a perfect game (not counting the 1 to) against the Knights (7/30).

RJ Jazul (CSJL) – Somebody had to score for the Knights (16 pts vs SBC, 7/30), but he bled for those points (5/18 fg). In any case, Jazul made up for it in other departments (6 asts, 4 stls).

Jaypee Belencion (CSJL) – Talk about crucial. Belencion’s three-pointers (9 pts, 3/6 3pts vs SBC, 7/30) were big. Considering he is a role player who only played for 5 mins. He thinly edged out Jamison Cortes (10 pts, 7 rebs vs SBC, 7/30), who also outdid himself.
