NCAA Season 84 Preview
Thu, Jun 26, 2008 by Purple and Gold
Hello there again, college basketball junkies and PEx bashers, it is time to give you another lesson in basketball and academics; thus it is time for another college basketball league preview. Now it's time we gave the NCAA a long and special introduction by featuring each team, but T15P is afraid that the NCAA preview will be compressed to 1 single post because while the T15P writers have much savvy about the UAAP, the T15P writers seriously have little idea about the NCAA and its whatabouts. The best we can do is pretend that we know something (at least me) by plagia... *ehem* doing research on inboundpass.com and ubelt.com. We're sorry for the 1-post preview for the NCAA but we're giving it anyway for you to read. And at least we're beating the Saturday afternoon deadline. Props to inboundpass.com again for the lineup additions and subtractions. Here it goes...
San Beda Red Lions
Season 83 rank: 1
Season 84 projected rank: 1
Subtractions: Yousif Aljamal, Jose Antonio Caram, Raymond Maggay and Alvin Padilla
Additions: Du Canlas, Jake Pascual, Gino Soliman and Jerome Villanueva
Outlook: San Beda will be the champions until that behemoth Sam Ekwe is there. The only question that's left to answer is who will take the bridesmaid finish. I'm betting my week's allowance on it. That's all that has to be said about San Beda. Ekwe is their clear-cut leader now that Yousif Aljamal is off and gone to the pros.
Letran Knights
Season 83 rank: 2
Season 84 projected rank: 3
Subtractions: Schubert Reposar, Bryan Faundo, and Andro Quinday
Additions: JP Belencion, Jam Cortez and Rhaydan Lacamento
Outlook: With the emergence of JRU, Letran will be hard-pressed to keep their hold as the second best team in NCAA Basketball. I am really not sure if RJ Jazul's hot hand is enough to keep them there. But that's yet to be determined. Letran is one of the teams I root for in the NCAA anyway, primarily because of FAUUUUUUUUUUNDOOOOOOOOOOOH!
JRU Heavy Bombers
Season 83 rank: 3
Season 84 projected rank: 2
Subtractions: Jerome Cruz, RJ Cunanan, Carlo Lituania and Jerome Ramos and Alvin Se
Additions: Alex Almario, Jecster Apinan, Derico Lopez, Nathaniel Matute and Nchotu John Njei
Outlook: Beaten by Letran last year, the Bombers have taken another step of maturation by entering the Final Four last year. This year, with an intact core and some foreigners, they are primed to beat some of the powerhouses, including SBC, and they are favored to beat out Letran for the 2nd twice to beat slot.
Mapua Cardinals
Season 83 rank: 4
Season 84 projected rank: 4
Subtractions: Sean Co, Joshua Reyes, Hermes Sumalinog, Arjay del Rosario and Jerby del Rosario
Additions: Jason Pascual, Allan Mangahas, Randolf Soriano, Mark Sarangay and Kevin Espinosa
Outlook: The Cardinals have been beaten by the San Beda Red Lions in the Final Four for the past two years - in which both years the Lions went on to capture the championship. Mapua has been the lucky charm team of team that went on to win the championship for the last two years or so. Reigning MVP Kelvin de la Pena will play his final year with Mapua but they will lose a good number of players from last year's core. They should still make it despite that. You know what's next.
San Sebastian Stags
Season 83 rank: 5
Season 84 projected rank: 6
Subtractions: Omar Ampatuan, Francis de Leon, Richard dela Cruz, Juanito Quiamco and Aldrin Umali
Additions: John Bartolo, Mark Anthony Bringas, Raymund Maconocido, John Semira and Paulo Taha
Outlook: SSC's core is still in place and it's strong. They just need to show more consistent play so their strong lineup can deliver wins. They could actually challenge the top teams, but for now they are ranked 6th - unless they can show that they can be more consistent. They should have been an automatic entry to the Final Four last year if not for some sorry losses. The NCAA competition this year anyway is six-strong at the least, depending if CSB and UPHDS decide to show up.
Perpetual Help Altas
Season 83 rank: 6
Season 84 projected rank: 8
Subtractions: Ryan Frebyan, Richard Mojado, Virgilio Manuel, Vladimir Joe, and Sang Myeon Lee
Additions: Robert Hainga, Jibbson Kong, Harry Petilos, Robin Roño and Rommel Vivero.
Outlook: They'll be lucky to win 5 games.
Saint Benilde Blazers:
Season 83 rank: 7
Season 84 projected rank: 7
Subtractions: Stan Aldover, Antonio Cadiz, Christian Cabatu, Gerald Layug, Harvey Porras, Paolo Orbeta, Kris Robles, David Urra and Martin Urra
Additions: Gee Abanilla, MC Abolucion; Chuck Dalanon, Christian de la Paz, Robbie Mañalac, Andrei Martinez, Dustin Posadas, Karl Stephen Santos, Aaron Umlas and Alexander Patrick Wong
Outlook: Saint Benilde only won 1 game last season. They'll win more games this season, but that doesn't mean that their ranking will change. Okay, that's the bad news. The good news is that there will be 8 teams this season, so they will be over one team. Gee Abanilla is in for a heck of a rebuilding process.
Philippine Christian U Dolphins
Season 83 rank: N/A
Season 84 projected rank: 5
Subtractions: Jason Castro, Robby David, Gabby Espinas, Ian Garrido, Clarence Graham, Jordan Hermosa, Marwhil Javelona and Joeryl Salem
Additions: George Allen, Junar Arce, Jaycee Asuncion, Rogelio Busa, Marlon Gomez, Dennis San Pedro, Stephen Siruma and Harold Sumera
Outlook: PCU is still lucky to field a decently competitive lineup after suffering from the suspension last year for monkey business in their athletics program. Beau Belga will most likely be back for PCU and he will spearhead their return. They'll have a hard time but they will be competitive and will fight for a Final Four slot. Mapua might have the inside track on them on the virtue that Mapua played last season and PCU didn't.
Final Four Prediction:
[1] San Beda
[4] Mapua
[2] JRU
[3] Letran
Finals Prediction:
[1] San Beda
[2] JRU
Season 84 Champs: San Beda Red Lions
The overview and the predictions are over. With that, let the games begin for the 84th Season of the NCAA.
