UAAP Basketball Prediction in a Flash
Sat, Jul 5, 2008 by Nash Castro
Because the UAAP has officially begun a few hours ago, I will make this quick.
Seniors:
1. Far Eastern University – if the Tamaraws were last year’s surprise package, that same crew just got a year older (if that flame thread rumor is true, make it hellotta years older) and a year wiser.
2. University of the East – the Red Warriors’ progress in the offseason could be summarized by a Daft Punk song: harder (sure), smaller (definitely), faster (zing!), better (maybe), stronger (we will see).
3. Ateneo de Manila University – the Eagles just got bigger (and a lot more expensive to maintain). Ryan Buenafe is worth his money, while Rabeh Al-Hussaini is the second coming of Ford Arao.
4. De La Salle University – with the plethora of injuries the Archers have, they resemble an infirmary list more than a defending champion lineup.
5. University of Santo Tomas – for playing hide and seek, they get dibs for the darkhorse tag.
6. Adamson University – surprising everyone is what Leo Austria and his Falcons did during the offseason. Then again, he has been the only coach who was able to give Adamson a decent finish.
7. National University – the cupboard seems bare but coach Manny Dandan has been there before and he could adjust.
8. University of the Philippines – one word: Aboy who?
-----
Women's:
1. Far Eastern University – they are good, they are deep, and they have a Nokia Pilipinas Youth squad member in their midst.
2. Ateneo de Manila University – the Lady Eagles get automatic second provided Sarah Mercado is healthy.
3. Adamson University – Nike Summer League champs, Kat Sandel, coach Emilia Vega. ‘nuff said.
4. University of Santo Tomas – among all teams this season, they have the most experienced lineup. That should be good for a final four slot.
5. University of the Philippines – last year’s runner-up played in the NSL as if they were not in the mood. Or maybe the Lady Maroons just missed Sidhaya Sadorra.
6. De La Salle University – the Lady Archers have not been the same since the Manalo twins era. With Mon Jose and Dominic Uy somewhere else, maybe there would more focus and less distractions.
7. University of the East – nothing much to expect here except…
8. National University – …that UE-NU games are classics.
-----
Juniors:
1. De La Salle Zobel – Boris Aldeguer, Joshua Webb, and others may be already gone, but that does not mean they will be pushovers this season.
2. Ateneo High School – the Eaglets are fun to watch because of Jamike Jarin. And because they could shoot with impunity.
3. University of Santo Tomas – the primary reason I would want to watch UST High is so that I could hear the barker announce, “Labingisa, three points!” which would then equal to 33 points. And the supposed cussing coach that could rival Jarin in fervor.
4. Adamson University – they are tall, they are big, and sometimes those are just enough.
5. Far Eastern University-Nicanor Reyes Educational Foundation – I wonder what happened to the Baby Tams, they were not as dominating in the preseason as before.
6. University of the Philippines Integrated School – I did not get to see them during the summer, which means I have nothing to say. Then again, nothing much is expected from them, except maybe pull another upset against Ateneo.
7. National University – they have a juniors varsity basketball program, as in for real. I saw them play in the NSL.
8. University of the East – the glaring thing here is that how much successful the seniors team is, that is how bad the juniors squad is.
